Do they actually sway voters last minute? How would they know unless the people they speak to disclose how they just voted?
Why would you want to stand outside on a cold rainy day talking politics? Why aren’t you at work? Why is this frog called the Mountain Chicken? Does my stomach think all potatoes are mashed? How did Grindelwald lose to Dumbledore despite having the Elder Wand?

I checked my mail this morning and last night, I got a flyer for the green party candidate for gover nor and my prevailing thought was “Woooooooow, if you handle le adership like your campaign then nothing will get done until the very last minute and even then you’ll just come up short.. .” Yes I’m cranky this morning, sue me!

Actually I don’t think you are allowed to campaign outside a polling location.

Does my stomach think all potatoes are mashed?
Only if you eat lumpy mashed potatoes.

Voter intimidation. See also: people protesting at the entrances of abortion clinics.

Plus the symbolic irony of the green party sending hundreds of paper flyers that will be ignored.

If I remember correctly, you have to be at least 100 feet away. They were set up across the parking lot.

Ummm that’s illegal. In Ohio at least you aren’t allowed to campaign, protest, or even wear political garb at the polling place.

This morning’s campaigners were supporting Democrat Jim Himes.

I think they do sway voters. Not necessarily sway, but there are people who go to the polls with no idea who they’re voting for, or only know of one or two, and those campaigning outside plant their candidates name in the undecided voters’ heads. Of course the reason we have undecided voters is because people are told they need to vote, it’s their civic duty, etc. but don’t care enough to actually know who’s running. So they feel societal pressure to vote, but don’t actually know who they want, and are easily swayed by those sorts of things.

I think there’s a 100 foot rule. They were across the parking lot, so technically 100+ feet away.

Keep in mind all the low information voters out there. For some of them, merely hearing a name along with some positive qualities might get them to vote for the candidate.
That said, it’s against the law to campaign within a certain distance ( 100ft I think) of the polling place.

Name recognition for uninformed voters.

It’s just marketing...name recognition. We have about 30 positions on our ballot today — tons of minor judges and sheriffs, etc. A lot of them have almost no budget for campaigning and I swear they just get elected on name recognition. Those are cases where exposure = votes.
But for major candidates, I have no idea why these people even bother.

IIRC socialogists have found that if you’re undecided or uninformed for a particular election, you’re most likely to vote for whoever’s name you saw last.
I just don't vote on those ones. I think a lot of people think their ballot is invalid if you don't fill the whole thing out.

In my state you need to be a certain distance from the polling place (like you’ve been saying) but since most polling places are schools with long driveways staying at the entrance of the school is far enough away and they always do it.
One of the nut-jobs this morning actually did sway my vote. She unfurled a “Vote No on # 1" sign right at the gymnasium entrance that she was hiding in her jacket until the cops told her to go screw. I was initially torn, but she swayed me to proudly vote YES .

From this I am gathering that you voted this morning, so thank you.

No, but seriously, why is it called a mountain chicken?

An attempt at peer pressure

Tastes like chicken?
You asked many good questions in one post.

I got home from voting at 5:00 to find flyers from 5 different campaigns shoved into the crack of the screen door and two more hung on the handle.
Other than stay at home moms I doubt they caught a single person at home. In the immediate area around me there aren’t any retirees. At that point it’s just a waste of time and resources.

Because Americans are fickle brains full of mush, they can vote for somebody one day and give him a 0% approval rating literally the day after, they choose candidates for local office based on major national issues that local officials have no power over, and they call themselves undecided even when there are at least two very, very different options.
